Jieyi Cai

Mental Health Practitioner & Doctoral Practicum Trainee

Jieyi (they/them/theirs) is a fifth-year Ph.D. candidate in Counseling Psychology at the University of Minnesota and a practicum trainee at Natalis. They received bachelor’s degrees in psychology and history from Brown University in 2017. Their previous clinical training experiences include university counseling, community mental health, and outpatient hospital settings.

In my clinical work, I use cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) approaches with a basis in feminist principles. My primary interests are working with people of color, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and clients with other marginalized identities, as well as individuals with histories of trauma. I emphasize the importance of understanding how clients’ social identities may shape the context of the issues that bring them to therapy. My clinical work is also shaped by my research on historical/intergenerational trauma in Asian American immigrant families, transracial and transnational adoption (as a non-adopted person), and health and well-being of LGBTQIA+ people of color.

Jieyi is working under the licensed supervision of Dr. Alexander Kovic, M.A., Psy.D., L.P. and sees clients at the University Avenue location.
