As a licensed psychologist, Dr. Desai’s clinical practice includes behavioral health consultation, family therapy, trauma-informed therapy, multicultural-informed therapy, psychological evaluations, citizenship testing, evaluations for court, mental health/chemical dependency counseling, and health psychology. He works with adults, children, and adolescents. Dr. Desai believes in providing multicultural care in order to create a place of nurturance, healing, and growth so individuals can achieve their maximum potential.
Dr. Desai’s hobbies include running, kite flying, cooking, language circles, and traveling. He is fluent in multiple languages such as Hindi and Gujarati. He travels abroad on a yearly basis as part of his self-care, exploring different countries.
Dr. Desai considers himself an integrative therapist, drawing from different schools of thought such as Multicultural Therapy, Attachment Therapy, Trauma-Informed Therapy, and Systems Theory.
Education & Professional Activities
Dr. Desai received his Bachelor of Science in Psychology from California Lutheran University, and received his Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy and his Doctoral degree in Counseling Psychology from Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota.
Dr. Desai is an active member of the Minnesota Psychological Association. He completed his clinical training at a private practice conducting neuropsychological evaluations with adults and children and conducting therapy at a residential tratment facility. Dr. Desai completed his pre-doctoral internship at Health Point, a medical clinic in Seattle, Washington, where he worked with a variety of populations such as victims of war, refugees, and individuals with complex medical challenges. He completed a 2-year fellowship in Addiction and Integrative Medicine at Northern Integrated Health. Furthermore, Dr. Desai spent one year at the Program of Human Sexuality at the University of Minnesota doing research to start a group for friends and loved ones of individuals who identify as transgender. Dr. Desai spent over 16 years working at Hennepin County Health and Human Services, where he worked in departments such as Parental Fees, Economic Assistance, and Child Support. He also currently an adjunct professor at University of Minnesota teaching a course in diagnosis and treatment interventions.
