Therapy for Children & Teens

INDIVIDUAL THERAPY FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES

Therapy services for children and teens can help address individual or family concerns, challenges or struggles.

Therapy can help youth develop new insights and coping skills that can not only reduce current symptoms, but can help pave a path for sustained, lifelong mental health. Obtaining therapy and support as soon as possible when you notice that your child might be having trouble managing problems on their own, or if those problems are affecting how they feel, act, or behave, is important.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The first step is to meet with one of our clinicians to talk about why you are seeking therapy services and do a thorough review of your child’s developmental, academic, social, emotional, behavioral, family, medical and treatment history. This is called a Diagnostic Assessment or Intake session. Our Behavior Support Specialists will send/email you all the required paperwork to complete prior to your meeting with your clinician. Please complete this as thoroughly as possible – it really helps us during this first meeting! During this meeting your clinician will also talk about next steps, provide recommendations and begin to plan for treatment.

If your child is under age 12, we request that this first meeting is with parent(s) or guardians only without your child present. This helps your clinician to gather all necessary information in a clear, honest and open discussion. We do require that this person(s) be a legal guardian/parent, and we will need a Release of Information from the legal guardian to talk with any other care givers. Your child’s input is also very important, this will be gathered at the next scheduled session.

If your child is 12 or older, we will meet together for this first session but may ask some family members to step out for a moment. We will collect information, talk together about recommendations and next steps and begin to plan for treatment.
